Rajab Butt case: Karachi lawyers booked over SHO assault

KARACHI: Police in Karachi have filed a case against a group of lawyers accused of assaulting a (SHO) during a heated confrontation tied to the alleged beating of YouTuber Rajab Butt earlier in the week at the City Courts.

According to police reports, the latest FIR was lodged based on a complaint by City Courts SHO Jahangir Bhutto. This development follows another FIR registered just a day earlier, accusing over a dozen lawyers of attacking Rajab Butt within the court premises.

The SHO’s account details that on December 30, during his routine patrol, he was informed about a mob of 40 to 50 lawyers forcefully entering a temporary police post located inside the City Courts compound. The individuals reportedly caused unrest and insisted on filing a case against Rajab Butt and his legal representative.

In his formal complaint, the SHO stated that upon arriving at the station that afternoon, he attempted to address the group’s grievances regarding an earlier FIR filed against some of their colleagues. During this exchange, he claims the lawyers verbally abused him and physically attacked him with punches and kicks. Police personnel eventually intervened to protect him, forcing the group to disperse. As they retreated, they allegedly shouted slogans and issued death threats. The FIR specifically identifies three lawyers while implicating dozens of others whose identities are yet to be confirmed.

Meanwhile, Rajab Butt’s lawyer had already initiated legal action against several attorneys, alleging that they assaulted Butt during his court appearance on Monday. According to the complaint, the YouTuber sustained injuries in the incident, during which his bag containing a significant amount of cash was snatched. Although the bag was returned, the money reportedly remained missing.

On the other hand, one of the accused lawyers defended their actions, asserting that tensions arose after Butt purportedly posted an online video using offensive language toward legal professionals. The situation was apparently de-escalated when the YouTuber issued an apology to members of the legal fraternity.

Investigations into both cases remain ongoing as law enforcement works to identify those responsible for sparking unrest and aims to restore peace and order within the judicial premises.
