Rana Sanaullah affirms Field Marshal Asim Munir’s eligibility for extended COAS tenure beyond 2027

ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister Rana Sanaullah has stated that Field Marshal Asim Munir is the most suitable candidate to remain as Chief of Army Staff beyond the year 2027, with his current term set to conclude in November of that year.

Sanaullah emphasized that, under the current legal framework, there is no need for a new notification for the extension of service for the Army Chief or other service heads, as the law has been amended to automatically extend their tenure until the completion of their service period. He explained, “Once the five-year term of the Air Chief is over, he will retire automatically,” adding that the law now eliminates the need for a formal retirement date in this context.

Commenting on the performance of Army Chief Asim Munir, Sanaullah remarked, “The achievements under his leadership make him highly deserving of an extension. The law permits extensions, and historically, Pakistan has seen multiple instances where service chiefs have received extensions — some even for personal reasons.”

The minister highlighted that the current legal provisions justify such extensions, and maintaining consistent leadership is crucial given the security concerns and regional issues facing Pakistan. He also affirmed that the incumbent government plans to serve its full term until March 2029, in accordance with legal provisions.
