Relief likely for electricity consumers as fuel charges drop

ISLAMABAD: Electricity consumers are likely to receive relief in their August 2025 bills due to a decrease in fuel charges.

Hydropower contributed the most to electricity generation, accounting for 39% of the total — a 14% increase compared to last year. On the other hand, nuclear power generation became more expensive and decreased in output. No electricity was generated using diesel, while Residual Fuel Oil (RFO) remained the most expensive source.

LNG and imported coal also saw price hikes. The cost of nuclear power rose by 60%, while its generation dropped by 30%.

Consumers may receive a relief of Rs. 0.654 per unit in their electricity bills for August 2025, attributed to lower fuel charges in June 2025.

The Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) has submitted a request to the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA), with a public hearing scheduled for July 30.

In June 2025, a total of 13,744 GWh of electricity was generated at an average cost of Rs. 7.87 per unit. Out of this, 13,310 GWh was supplied to consumers at an average rate of Rs. 7.68 per unit. Compared to the same period last year, the per-unit cost of electricity has decrease.
