Resolution presented in Sindh Assembly to address Karachi power outages

KARACHI: The Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) has brought a resolution before the Sindh Assembly to protest against the persistent scheduled and unscheduled power outages by K-Electric in Karachi, especially amid the ongoing heatwave.

The resolution, filed by MQM-P Member of Provincial Assembly (MPA) Maaz Mehboob, calls for an immediate halt to load shedding during extreme weather conditions, citing the severe hardships faced by residents due to prolonged power failures.

“As the hot season begins, residents of Karachi, including those in my constituency PS-127, are experiencing frequent and unannounced power cuts,” the resolution stated. It recalled that last year, assurances were made before a special assembly committee that load-shedding would be minimized, yet residents continue to suffer.

The resolution criticized K-Electric for neglecting directives issued by the special committee, asserting that the utility’s actions have violated the privileges of the Sindh Assembly. It urged authorities to ensure that K-Electric refrains from implementing load-shedding during heatwaves, in line with government instructions.

Furthermore, the MQM-P demanded legal proceedings against K-Electric for any fatalities caused by heat-related illnesses worsened by power outages during heatwaves. The resolution emphasized that cases should be registered against KE for such deaths.

MPA Mehboob highlighted that residents in PS-127 endure between 12 to 16 hours of daily load-shedding, describing the situation as intolerable and calling for urgent intervention. The resolution also requests that K-Electric be compelled to submit a comprehensive report detailing all forms of load-shedding—both announced and unannounced—in Karachi to the Sindh Assembly.
