ISLAMABAD: The car in which Colonel (retd) Ishaq Qazi and his daughter were travelling swept away by a strong current in seasonal stream after heavy rain in Islamabad DHA Phase 5.
According to the detail, the eye witnesses has told that Colonel (retd) Ishaq Qazi had attempted to drive the car across the stream near the edge, but failed, the reportedly called for help from inside the car. They were driving the car near storm drain when the floodwater suddenly rose, trapped and carrying their vehicle away.
Meanwhile, low lying areas in Rawalpindi and Islamabad have been submerged and the rainwater entered houses. Intermittent rain in the twin cities, affected Talhaar, Saidpur, Bagh Rajgan, Kharkun, and Sohawa villages. Flow of traffic has also been disrupted in Adiala Circle and at Biscuit Factory Chowk due to accumulation of rainwater.
The rainfall that began last night in popular hill station Murree and surrounding areas has been continuing intermittently as a result of which several trees were uprooted and vehicles getting stuck.
Landslides were reported on Bustal Road and at Awain Point on the Expressway, in which three people sustained minor injuries. Rescue teams evacuated 11 people and several vehicles from the affected areas.
In Numb Jhanda Gali village, two houses were hit by a landslide. Fortunately, no loss of life was reported.
As a result of the rains, power supply has been suspended for the past 12 hours in Bhurban and surrounding areas.
Heavy monsoon rains have claimed five more lives in the past 24 hours, bringing the nationwide death toll to 221. According to the NDMA, the latest victims include two men and three children, while 10 others were injured. Over 804 houses have been completely destroyed in rain-related incidents.
Punjab is the hardest-hit province, with 135 deaths, 470 injuries, and over 190 damaged houses. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa reported 40 deaths and 69 injuries, along with 220 houses damaged. In Sindh, 22 people have died and 40 were injured, while Balochistan reported 16 deaths and four injuries
