Rifts widen as PPP walks out of Parliament amid tensions with PML-N

ISLAMABAD: The alliance between the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) is showing signs of strain as PPP lawmakers staged a walkout from the National Assembly following a protest in the Senate, reflecting escalating political tensions.

During the session, senior PPP leader Raja Pervez Ashraf voiced concerns over the growing hostility between the parties. “I am from Punjab, but my loyalty is to Pakistan first,” Ashraf declared. “No one should think PPP can be pushed aside or sidelined. We do not accept provocative rhetoric that divides the nation.”

He warned against provincialism, emphasizing unity with the slogan “Pakistan Khappay,” and urged colleagues to avoid creating a divisive atmosphere.

The walkout was triggered shortly after Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz made a veiled critique of PPP, stating, “Keep your advice to yourself—issues like the Benazir Income Support Programme are not the concern of everyone.” Her remarks sparked a volley of exchanges between the two parties, particularly affecting the relations between Sindh and Punjab governments.

Tensions further escalated as statements from Punjab Information Minister Azma Bukhari prompted sharp responses from PPP leaders like Sharjeel Memon. Bukhari accepted a public debate challenge issued by Memon, intensifying the political discord.

Meanwhile, former President Asif Ali Zardari has taken note of the worsening situation, calling Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi to Karachi for urgent consultations aimed at de-escalating the conflict. Nawaz Sharif also voiced support for Maryam Nawaz, asserting her right to defend her province’s interests amid criticism, and backing her stance.

The ongoing exchange of barbs and political confrontations have highlighted deepening divisions within the coalition government, raising concerns about the stability of the alliance and the potential impact on inter-provincial harmony.
