Rana Disq. Case: LHC Reserves Verdict on Maintainability

Lahore (October 5, 2017): Lahore High Court reserved the judgment about the maintainability of a petition seeking Law minister Punjab Rana Sanaullah’s disqualification for derogatory remarks about the judiciary.

Petitioner by Abbas Nasir, who is the deputy secretary general of Majlis-e-Wahdatul- Muslimeen, argues that Rana Sanaullah’s statements about the head of the enquiry tribunal that probed the Model Town incident was inflammatory, derogatory, disrespectful, and reeked of contempt for the judiciary.

Thus, the petitioner argues, Rana Sanaullah is not competent to remain a member of provincial assembly Punjab.

The petitioner pleads the court ro declare Rana Sanaullah disqualified.During the hearing the case today Justice Shahid Karim remarked that there is a prima facie law for disqualification because such statements fall under the clauses for disqualification.

However, Justice Shahid Karim continued, no one could be declared disqualified on the basis on allegations and newspapers cuttings. If the petitioner likes he could approach the Election Commission.
