KARACHI: The Supreme Court’s three-member panel has cleared Rehman Bhola and Zubair alias Charia of all charges in the 2012 Baldia Factory fire tragedy.
The bench, led by Justice Shahzad Malik, accepted the appeals filed by the two men, overturning their previous convictions. The accused were accused of causing the deaths of 259 workers who perished in the devastating blaze on September 11, 2012, in Karachi’s Baldia neighborhood.
Ruling with the benefit of the doubt, the Supreme Court acquitted the defendants. Earlier, an anti-terrorism court sentenced both to death, a verdict that was later upheld by the Sindh High Court.
