SC Issues Notice to Federation on Sharjeel’s Bail Plea

Islamabad (December 15, 2017): The Supreme Court (SC) on Friday sought reply from the federation over the bail application of former Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon in Rs5.76 billion corruption case.

A three-member bench headed by Justice Asif Saeed Khosa heard the bail application of Memon in a NAB case against him on charges of corruption amounting to Rs5.76 billion.

At present, the former minister along with other accused is in prison after a Sindh High Court bench revoked interim bail granted to him and others in the case.

During the hearing, Justice Khosa observed that it was unusual people fell ill the moment they were arrested by NAB.He remarked that NAB needed to construct an state-of-the-art hospital for the high profile accused. Khosa said that as per media report Memon had been allocated a whole floor of the hospital where he is admitted.He remarked that law allowed shifting of inmates to hospital for treatment, but people were misusing this facility.

He added it has become a practice medical board constituted to examine any under trail prisoner used to favour the accused. Upon this the courts have become cautious, he observed.

Upon this, Sharjeel counsel said that jail administration wrote to Sindh government stating Sharjeel’s treatment was not possible at jail’s health facility. Upon this he was shifted to a local hospital, the counsel informed.Justice Khosa said that Sindh High Court (SHC) had revoked the interim bail of the accused. The counsel replied that they had filed intra-court appeal against the bench decision.

The court while issuing notice to federal government adjourned hearing of the case till first week of January.
