Islamabad: Supreme Court of Pakistan (SC) has summoned a schedule of local bodies election from Punjab, Sindh and Balochistan.

Justice Qazi Faiz Essa heard the petition regarding local bodies election. Justice Qazi Faiz Essa questioned that why the local bodies election are not being held? didn’t Chief Election Commissioner read the constitution? he said that it seems that democracy is not a preference.

Attorney General Khalid Javed responded that the democracy is the top priority while Justice Essa said that the court had ordered to hold local bodies election in the provinces. Did the matter bring into the notice of the cabinet? To which Attorney General replied that there is no need to present the matter in the cabinet adding that on his advice the government had withdrawn the notification regarding Mayor Islamabad.

Justice Essa said that Chief Election Commissioner if he is not able to implement the constitution then say categorically about it. Justice Essa referring the article 6 said that those who are creating hurdles in the implementation of the constitution are committing treason adding that it seems as the election commission is taking instructions from somewhere else instead of the constitution. If you are not able to hold local bodies elections then you should resign.

The SC summoning election schedule of local bodies election in Punjab, Sindh and Balochistan ordered the Chief Election Commissioner to hold meetings with the respective provincial members and the matter of election schedule be discussed while ordered to submit progress report of meeting minutes on February 4.
