ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Senate gave the green light to the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Amendment Bill 2026 on Thursday.
The bill was introduced in the Senate by Senator Abdul Qadir and quickly became a point of contention. Opposition members voiced strong objections, with Senator Ali Zafar condemning the move, calling it a “blow to the Constitution.”
During the debate, Zafar argued that the legislation undermines democratic values and could be exploited by the ruling party to target political rivals. He further alleged that recent legislative measures, including this bill, seemed aimed at discrediting the founders of PTI.
Zafar also criticized the procedural aspects, noting that no private members’ day was allocated for discussion and implying that the bill’s origins might not be entirely transparent.
Meanwhile, the government reportedly approached the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) once again to garner support for the proposed NAB law changes. Sources indicated that the PPP requested a copy of the draft bill for review. After examining the proposals, the PPP decided to endorse the legislation, leading to its passage in the Senate.
