Senate Session will resume today at 4 PM after two-days break

ISLAMABAD: The Senate convened today at 4 PM after a two-day break, with the agenda comprising 50 items focused on constitutional amendments, legislative reforms, and national security issues.

The session kicked off with several significant bills slated for discussion and presentation. Senator Zeshan Khan Zada introduced the Constitutional Amendment Bill 2025 aimed at amending Article 228 of the Constitution. Additionally, Senator Afnanullah Khan presented the Amendment Bill 2025 targeting vulgar advertisements, reflecting ongoing efforts to regulate media content.

Legislative proposals also included amendments to the Islamabad Food Safety Act 2021, the Mental Health Ordinance 2001, and crucial laws such as the Science and Technology Council Act 2017 and the National Disaster Management Act 2010.

Bills concerning the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council Act 2022 and the Bar Councils Act 1973 are expected to undergo discussion, alongside bills approved by the National Assembly.

Senator Rana Mahmood Hassan introduced the Second Amendment Bill of the Trade Organizations Bill 2025, while Senator Sheri Rahman’s bill seeks to prohibit underage marriages, highlighting social reform initiatives.

The agenda features plans to establish the Gurki Institute of Science and Technology and the International Examination Board, with subsequent discussions on bills approved by Standing Committees.

Notably, Senator Samina Mumtaz Zahri will present amendments to the Prevention of Torture Law 2021 and to Article 51 of the Constitution, alongside proposals for a new University of Innovation and Technology.

Security and national integrity are also on the agenda, with discussions on amendments to the Motor Vehicles Ordinance 1965, the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor Authority Bill 2022, and laws related to the security of national highways, management of abandoned properties, and safeguarding Pakistan’s symbols and name. A bill aimed at preventing unauthorized use of Pakistan’s symbols will also be introduced.

In a move toward social issues, Senator Saminah Mumtaz Zahri plans to withdraw two bills concerning women’s rights. The session will also feature a detailed discussion on India’s recent aggression and Pakistan’s military response, emphasizing national security and sovereignty.

The Senate continues its efforts to deliberate on crucial legislative reforms and national security matters, shaping the future legal and constitutional landscape of the country.
