SHC rejects Hafiz Naeem petition seeking prohibiting order regarding mayor election

Karachi: The Sindh High Court (SHC) on Wednesday rejected Jamat-e-Islami (JI) Karachi Ameer Hafiz Naeem Ur Rehman prohibiting petition for stopping the mayor election.

A hearing was held in the SHC on Hafiz Naeem Ur Rehman petition against a legislation for direct election. The JI counsel argued that the legislation is negation of the constitution article number 140-A and against the basic spirit of the constitution.

The legislation after whole the election process is based on bad intention.

He added that the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) notification regarding the election of mayor is illegal, while he insisted the court to delay the election untill final verdict of the case.

Advocate General Sindh in his arguments said that in the assembly the JI supported the amendment and here the party president has filed the petition adding that if the elections was stopped then it will hurt the people.
He said that the local government is the need of the masses.

The court rejected the JI prohibitory petition against holding of the mayor election.

The SHC asked to the advocate general Sindh to submit written reply and adjourned the hearing till June 22.
