SHC Shows Resentment Over Absence Of Suspects’ Counsel

KARACHI: Sindh High Court (SHC) on Thursday expressed resentment while hearing Sindh police corruption case after suspects’ counsel failed to appear before the court.

Sindh High Court heard bail pleas of former IG Sindh Ghulam Haider Jamali, IG Tanvir Tahir and other suspects in a case pertaining to alleged corruption in Sindh police.

In its remarks, the court expressed concern over duration of the reference hearing.

“It has been a year since the reference was filed but the plea hearings are still ongoing”, the court stated.

During the hearing, NAB Prosecutor said that the plea bargains were tabled by police official Tanvir Ahmed, Atiq ur Rehman and Shafiq. He added that their pleas were forwarded to the headquarters of the Anti-graft watchdog.

The court then adjourned hearing of the case till May 21, ordering lawyer of the accused to make his appearance before the court ‘at any cost’ in next hearing.

It may be pertinent to mention that former IG Sindh Ghulam Haider Jamali, IG Tanvir Tahir and other individuals are accused by NAB of alleged corruption in Sindh police department.

According to NAB, the suspects are responsible for damaging national exchequer by Rs150 million by deducting certain amount from salaries of other police officials and handing contracts on the basis of partiality and without tenders.
