WEB DESK: At least three individuals have lost their lives in a shooting that took place in Uppsala, Sweden, according to police reports.

On Tuesday, authorities stated they had received multiple calls from the public reporting sounds resembling gunfire near Vaksala Square, located in the heart of the city, approximately 60 kilometers (37 miles) north of Stockholm. Emergency services responded quickly, and a murder investigation has since been initiated.

Swedish public broadcaster SVT reported that the suspect is believed to have fled the scene on a scooter.

Justice Minister Gunnar Strommer expressed his ministry’s close cooperation with law enforcement and ongoing monitoring of the situation.

“A brutal act of violence has occurred in central Uppsala. This coincides with the entire city preparing for Walpurgis Night,” Strommer commented, referencing the traditional celebration held on April 30 in parts of northern Europe and Scandinavia. “What has transpired is extremely serious,” he added.

The details surrounding the shooting are still emerging, and authorities have not yet confirmed a motive.
