KARACHI: Accountability court on Friday extended physical remand of Sindh Assembly speaker Agha Siraj Durrani till March 11 in assets beyond known sources of income case.

Siraj Durrani appeared before accountability room no. III in Karachi city where the accountability watchdogs sought an extension in physical remand of the senior politician.

On this occasion, several PPP supporters also gathered outside the court and chanted slogans in favour of the arrested PPP leader.

As the hearing went underway, Agha Siraj Durrani claimed that he was fully cooperating with the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) in their investigation.

The provincial assembly’s speaker expressed contentment on the treatment of the accountability watchdogs with him, however, reiterated his call against them for alleged misconduct with his family during NAB’s raid at his home.

The investigative officer told the accountability court that probing has been difficult in the case because suspect Agha Siraj goes to attend sessions of Sindh Assembly regularly.

During the hearing, NAB Prosecutor pleaded to extend physical remand of the under-custody senior politician to continue the investigation. However, prosector’s plea faced strong opposition from Agha Siraj’s lawyer who appealed against it.

Accountability court, after hearing arguments of both parties in the case, extended physical remand of Siraj Durrani till March 11.

On the other hand, in order to avoid arrest, Agha Siraj’s brother Agha Maseeh Uddin has filed a protective bail plea in Sindh High Court (SHC).

It is pertinent to mention that NAB apprehended Speaker Sindh Assembly from Islamabad hotel on Wednesday over charges of financial irregularities in government funds from a five-star hotel of Islamabad.
