Sindh Govt Extends Rangers’ Policing Powers For 90 Days 

Karachi (October 11, 2018): The Sindh government on Wednesday extended the special policing powers granted to the Rangers under Section 4(2) of the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA) 1997 within Karachi division for 90 days.

The Sindh government extended the special policing powers to the Rangers by keeping in view the current law and order situation in the city, read a notification issued by the home ministry.

The special policing powers to rangers are extended from October 08 to January 05, 2019.

Earlier on April 10, Chief Minister Sindh Murad Ali Shah had extended Rangers’ special policing powers in Karachi for a period of 90 days.

Sources said the Sindh Home Department had also written a letter to the federal government pertaining to the extension in Rangers’ special powers.

Under the Anti-Terrorism Act 1997, the paramilitary force had been conferred with powers to independently act against criminals and suspected terrorists within Karachi division.The period of special powers given to Rangers was to be expired midnight on Wednesday.

However, with the extension in powers, paramilitary personnel will now be able to take action against miscreants for maintaining law and order in the city for another 90 days.
