Sindh Govt Files Review Petition In Daniel Pearl Murder Case

Islamabad: The Sindh government on Friday filed a review petition in the Supreme Court against the acquittal of the men accused of murdering American journalist Daniel Pearl.

The petition was filed against the January 28 decision of the apex court.

Earlier, SC bench headed by Justice Mushir Alam had dismissed Sindh government’s petition against the decision of Sindh High Court (SHC) to overturn the conviction of accused Ahmed Omer Sheikh, Fahad Naseem, Salman Saqib and Sheikh Adil.

SHC had commuted the death sentence of prime suspect Ahmed Omer Sheikh to seven years in prison.

Justice KK Agha and Justice Zulfiqar Ali Sangi issued verdict on appeals, lodged by the suspects against their sentences, after 18 years and acquitted the other three accused in the case who had earlier been handed life terms.

Later, Attorney General Khalid Javed Khan told that he was in touch with the Sindh government regarding the case. SC had issued a short order in the Daniel Pearl murder case; Justice Yahya Khan Afridi disagreed with the decision to acquit the accused.

He said the men were acquitted on the basis of lack of evidence.

Let it be known that an anti-terrorism had handed over death sentence to Ahmed Omer Sheikh and life terms to Fahad Naseem, Salman Saqib and Sheikh Adil on July 15, 2002 for abducting Daniel Pearl for ransom and killing him afterwards.

Daniel Pearl was working as the South Asia Bureau Chief of The Wall Street Journal.
