Sindh IG orders stringent action against vehicles lacking number plates, licences

KARACHI: The Sindh police have been directed to initiate a firm crackdown on vehicles operating without proper registration plates or valid driving licenses across the province.

In October, Karachi traffic authorities launched an electronic challan (e-challan) system, leveraging CCTV cameras to monitor and penalize traffic violations throughout the city.

Ghulam Nabi Memon, the Inspector General of Sindh, issued a second directive within just over a month, emphasizing that numerous vehicles are still being driven without official registration or licensing documentation. The order calls for authorities to swiftly identify such vehicles and their drivers and to enforce penalties under the Motor Vehicle Ordinance.

The directive requires a comprehensive campaign, including vehicle seizures, case registrations, and potential arrests. Enforcement agencies are also instructed to send daily updates on their activities to the IG Operations Room via email. This order has been disseminated to all DIGs, SSPs, and senior police officials across Sindh. The initial directive was issued on October 31, 2025, highlighting ongoing concerns.

Reports have previously surfaced of unregistered vehicles cruising freely on Karachi’s roads, with social media users sharing videos of cars without number plates. The Sindh IG has taken notice of these reports, even as the modern e-challan system continues to facilitate enforcement. While the digital system is in place, authorities are now expected to intensify efforts to curb such violations and ensure compliance across the province.
