Six-truck collision on M5 motorway leaves seven injured amid dense fog

LAHORE: Dense fog caused heavily reduced visibility on the Multan-Sukkur Motorway (M5) on Tuesday, resulting in a collision involving six trailer trucks and leaving seven individuals injured, as reported by Rescue 1122. Among the injured, two were rescued from a truck during the operation.

Rescue officials detailed that the accident occurred when moving trucks collided with stationary ones that had stopped due to the poor visibility caused by the fog.

Part of the Lahore–Karachi motorway network, M5 extends up to Sukkur and was temporarily closed following the incident. This closure diverted thousands of travelers to the National Highway, where they had to find alternative routes to their destinations.

The motorway’s shutdown also led to severe traffic congestions near key interchanges, including Zahir Pir, Uch Sharif, Jhangra, Jalalpur Pirwala, and Shujabad.

A spokesperson for the NHMP stated that closing part of M5 was a precautionary measure to ensure road safety due to the drastically reduced visibility.

The official warned that lane violations during foggy conditions increase the risk of serious accidents and emphasized the importance of adhering to lane discipline.

Motorists were further advised to restrict their travel during foggy periods to daylight hours between 10 am and 6 pm, use fog lights, avoid unnecessary trips, maintain safe distances from other vehicles, and refrain from exceeding speed limits.
