Web Desk: Sixteen years have passed since the 7.6 magnitude earthquake on October 8, 2005, destroyed schools and houses.
The dead were remembered today at public and private ceremonies. Different events are being organized in different parts of the country including Azad Jammu and Kashmir to express solidarity and sympathies with the victims of calamities.

The National Resilience Day is also being observed today across the country to express solidarity with the victims of 2005 earthquake.
The earthquake claimed thousands of lives besides causing massive damage to infrastructure especially in Azad Kashmir and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Large number of people including family members, relatives and friends are visiting the graveyards in the quake hit areas to offer fateha for the departed souls.
The upper parts of Pakistan and Azad Kashmir were shaken by the earthquake 16 years ago.
On Friday morning, a ceremony was held in Azad Kashmir’s Muzaffarabad to commemorate October 8 earthquake.
Azad Kashmir Prime Minister Sardar Abdul Qayyum Khan Niazi laid flowers at the memorial of martyrs.

The central ceremony was held at University College Ground. A minute’s silence followed the sounding of the siren in memory of the earthquake martyrs.
It should be mentioned that 7.6 tremors on Richter scale shook parts of country at 08:52am local time on Oct 08, 2005, causing massive destruction putting it higher than the massive scale of destruction of the Quetta earthquake in 1935.

Besides death of over 80,000 people, more than 100,000 people were injured in the quake, which also destroyed villages, roads, schools, hospitals, bridges and caused massive land sliding in the most affected areas.
In Islamabad as many as 73 people were killed and 100 others injured in the temblor that brought down Margalla Towers in a matter of seconds because of design faults than the might of the quake that measured 7.6 on the Richter scale.
