South Korea’s parliament initiates an investigation into the 2024 Jeju Air crash

WEB DESK: South Korea’s parliament has initiated an inquiry into last year’s tragic Jeju Air crash that resulted in the loss of 179 lives.

A special parliamentary committee, consisting of 18 members from the National Assembly, has commenced an investigation set to last a minimum of 40 days. This committee aims to thoroughly examine potential causes of the accident, such as a bird strike or possible mechanical issues with the aircraft.

Furthermore, the investigation will scrutinize whether there were attempts to obscure critical information during the government’s initial inquiry into the crash.

On December 29, a Jeju Air flight traveling from Bangkok faced a catastrophic incident when it was forced to make an emergency landing at Muan International Airport, approximately 290 kilometers (180 miles) south of Seoul. The plane overshot the runway, collided with a concrete barrier, and caught fire. Tragically, only two crew members survived out of the 181 people aboard.

Relatives of the victims have criticized the government’s investigation, questioning its transparency and credibility. They are demanding an independent investigation, as highlighted in the report.
