State does not believe in academic freedom even today, deplores Rabbani

PESHAWAR: Chairman Senate Raza Rabbani on Wednesday said that it was ironic and deplorable the state did not believe in academic freedom even today.

Addressing a function at Shaheed Benazir Bhutto Women University in Peshawar, Rabbani said that those who believed in academic freedom in this country met the fate of Mashal Khan.

He said that Mashal was murdered for believing in academic freedom.

The veteran PPP leader said: “it was high time for us to sit together and convince each others through arguments and logic about our respective stance and opinions. It is not the feature of a democratic society to impose one’s opinion on others through violence and force.”

Rabbani also came down hard on military dictators in the country, saying that the policies of dictators result in incidents like that of mob lynching of Abdul Wali Khan University’s student Mashal Khan in Mardan.

He deplored that violence and extremism replaced Faiz Ahmed Faiz and Jaun Elia

He pointed out that Khyber Pakhtunkhwa was always neglected in power sharing.  He added that the province was also neglected in economical and political development.

He deplored that following the death of Quaid-e-Azam, the very concept of inception of the country was changed.
