Storm warning! heavy rain, thunderstorms to hit Karachi, Sindh

KARACHI: The Provincial Disaster Management Authority has issued a weather alert warning of heavy rain and thunderstorms in Karachi and several districts across Sindh in the coming days.

According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department, rainfall accompanied by strong winds and thunderstorms is expected on March 25, 26, 28, and 29. Areas likely to be affected include Thatta, Badin, Hyderabad, Sukkur, Dadu, Kashmore, Jacobabad, and Larkana.

In response, PDMA has directed all departments to remain on high alert, ensuring that emergency machinery and response teams are fully prepared. Authorities have warned that gusty winds and possible hailstorms could damage fragile structures and solar installations, while temperatures are also expected to drop.

Residents have been advised to limit unnecessary travel, while tourists are urged to exercise caution. Farmers have also been instructed to take preventive measures to safeguard their crops.

The alert follows directives from Asif Haider Shah, who chaired a high-level meeting to review the weather situation. He instructed commissioners and district officials to stay actively engaged in the field over the next week and ensure full preparedness.

Local administrations have been ordered to keep drainage systems operational, maintain smooth traffic flow, and remove potentially dangerous billboards. Public awareness campaigns are also being ramped up ahead of the expected weather spell.

Meanwhile, the Met Office has forecast widespread rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds across the country from March 24 to 30. A western weather system is expected to enter parts of Balochistan on March 24 and intensify by March 27, bringing wet conditions to multiple districts including Quetta, Gwadar, Turbat, Khuzdar, and others.
