Sugar prices set by authorities; official notification released

KARACHI: The Karachi administration has announced a new fixed wholesale price for sugar at Rs 140 per kilogram and a retail price of Rs 143 per kilogram. An official notification confirming these rates has been issued.

As per the directive from the Karachi commissioner’s office, these prices are effective immediately and will remain in place until further notice. The commissioner emphasized that no individual or organization is permitted to sell sugar at prices outside the official rates.

Furthermore, the commissioner warned that strict legal action would be taken against any violations. He also directed all wholesalers and retailers to prominently display the official price list in their shops to ensure compliance.

in December 2025, Abdul Rauf Ibrahim, Chairman of the Wholesale Grocers Association, reported a Rs 6 per kilogram decrease in sugar prices at the wholesale level, providing some relief to traders.

He explained that in Karachi’s wholesale markets, sugar is now priced at Rs 146 per kg, with the ex-mill rate dropping to Rs 142 per kg following the commencement of the crushing season. Since December 1, prices have declined by Rs 54 per kg, reflecting ongoing supply chain adjustments.

However, Ibrahim noted that retail prices remain elevated, with sugar still retailing between Rs 170 and Rs 180 per kg. He attributed this discrepancy to administrative lapses that have prevented the pass-through of wholesale price reductions to consumers.

Expressing hope for further price decreases, Ibrahim predicted that retail prices could fall to around Rs 120 per kg by the end of the month if proper monitoring measures are implemented. He called on authorities to ensure that the benefits of lower wholesale prices are reflected in retail outlets to provide relief to consumers.
