Suo motu case of Mashal Lynching: AG KP presents JIT report in SC

Islamabad (May 17, 2017): Advocate General Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Wednesday presented the report of Joint Investigation Team constituted to probe Mashal Khan’s lynching in Supreme Court.

A three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Saqib Nisar is hearing suo motu case of lynching of Mashal Khan, a student of Abdul Wali Khan University Mardan, by a mob on charges of blasphemy.

The report presented in the SC by AG KP said that out of the 57 accused nominated in the case some 53 had so far been arrested. Of them 49 accused were in prison in judicial remand, it added.

During the hearing, the application for constitution of judicial commission to investigate the lynching was withdrawn.

During previous hearing, the SC had directed Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa police to speed up the investigation in Mashal Khan’s lynching case.

Chief Justice of Pakistan Mian Saqib Nisar had observed that although they do not want to interfere in the investigation, but it should be quickly done without wasting time.

During the hearing of the suo motu case taken up by the apex court, Additional Advocate-General of K-P Waqar Khan submitted a progress report on behalf of K-P police, stating that the Joint Investigation Team (JIT) had been reconstituted with representatives of ISI, MI, FIA, Special Branch and police.

The report stated that the JIT has held several meetings, visited the crime scene and met members of the university’s administration and examined the accused.
