Supreme Court declines urgent plea for meeting with PTI founder

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Monday rejected an immediate meeting request with Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan but addressed key developments in the cipher case proceedings.

During the hearing, PTI lawyer Latif Khosa sought permission to meet Imran Khan. Chief Justice Yahya Afridi, leading a two-member bench, issued a government notice for Tuesday. He stated that no orders could be made without notifying authorities and addressing procedural objections, as related cases were still pending in other courts.

The Chief Justice noted that the case, linked to an August 24, 2023, order, might no longer be relevant. He emphasized that the validity of the matter must be confirmed before any decisions about the meeting could proceed.

Advocate Khosa repeated his request, but the Chief Justice reaffirmed that the court would follow due process, with a decision expected by Tuesday. The hearing was adjourned.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court approved the formation of a three-member bench to review appeals against acquittals of Imran Khan and Shah Mahmood Qureshi in the cipher case.

The court dismissed Imran Khan’s bail plea in the Al-Qadir Trust case as it deemed it infructuous. Bail revocation petitions for Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi in the Toshakhana case were also dismissed as ineffective.

Additionally, a separate three-member bench will examine bail revocation cases related to incidents in Lahore on May 9. Further hearings on these matters are pending.
