Syed Peer Muhammad Shah reappointed as DIG traffic Karachi

KARACHI: Just weeks after being transferred, Syed Peer Muhammad Shah has been reinstated as Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Traffic Karachi, according to a notification issued on Friday.

The official order, signed by Sindh Chief Secretary Asif Haider Shah, stated that Shah, a PSP (BS-20) officer previously awaiting posting in the Services, General Administration and Coordination

Department, has been appointed as DIG Traffic Karachi with immediate effect.

The notification also confirmed that the additional charge of DIG Traffic Karachi has been withdrawn from Mazhar Nawaz Sheikh, who will continue to serve as Deputy Inspector General of Police at the Central Police Office, Sindh.

Background of the Transfer

Shah had been removed from the post on January 29 and replaced by Sheikh. Sources linked his earlier removal to alleged traffic mismanagement during the deadly fire at Gul Plaza, where severe congestion reportedly obstructed the movement of emergency vehicles.

The tragic blaze resulted in at least 80 fatalities and sparked criticism regarding traffic control and emergency response in the area.

In addition to the incident, Shah had reportedly faced allegations related to the alleged kidnapping of a businessman. According to sources, he was accused of influencing the registration of a case involving the recovery of over Rs310 million. He was later taken into custody by Hyderabad Police in Karachi. The businessman was subsequently released and filed a case against Shah at Gizri Police Station.

No official statement had been issued earlier detailing the reasons for Shah’s removal. His reappointment now restores him to the key traffic management role in Karachi.
