Syria’s New Administration Reopens Airspace

DAMASCUS: Syria’s new interim administration reopened the country’s airspace on Sunday afternoon.

Following the lifting of the airspace closure, flights have resumed over Syrian territory. The first flight, MEA 311, traveled from Amman, Jordan, to Beirut via Syrian airspace. Subsequent flights to Baghdad, Jeddah, and other cities also passed through Syrian skies.

Syria’s airspace had been closed a week earlier following the ousting of President Bashar al-Assad.

The last Syrian Airlines plane, which reportedly flew President Bashar al-Assad out of the country, took off from Damascus Airport early Sunday morning.

According to foreign media, former President Bashar al-Assad was transported to a local airbase on flight RB 9218, from where he fled the country aboard a Russian aircraft.

Regarding the reopening of Syrian airspace, the Syrian Minister of Transport announced that the country’s two major airports, Damascus and Aleppo, would soon be restored for flight operations.
