KARACHI: A speeding water tanker struck a motorcycle carrying four children in the Manghopir area of the city, resulting in the death of one child and injuries to three others, police said.
According to authorities, the tanker driver fled the scene after the collision but was later arrested within the jurisdiction of the Pakistan Bazaar Police Station.
Police officials said the motorcycle was being driven by a minor, Sharjeel, who was taking his brother, sister and cousin to school at the time of the accident. The children are residents of Mehran City.
The deceased child was identified as Hassan, while the injured were named Fatima, Abdullah and Sharjeel. The body of the victim and the injured children were shifted to a nearby hospital for medical treatment and legal formalities.
Authorities said the tanker driver was later apprehended by police after fleeing the accident site.
The incident highlights the growing number of traffic accidents in Karachi involving heavy vehicles, which have repeatedly resulted in fatalities and raised concerns about traffic management in the port city.
In a separate incident earlier, a three-year-old girl lost her life and two others were injured when a speeding oil tanker hit a motorcycle near Korangi Crossing Bridge.
Police said the accident occurred in the Allahwala Town area when the tanker collided with a motorcycle carrying three family members.
The deceased child was identified as Sara. She was travelling with her 18-year-old uncle, Raj Muhammad, and her one-year-old brother, Subhan. According to police, the uncle was taking the children out to buy juice when the tanker struck them.
Sara died at the scene, while Raj Muhammad and Subhan were injured and taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Police added that the family lives in Allahwala Town and originally belongs to Gilgit-Baltistan. After the completion of legal procedures, the body of the child was handed over to her family.
Following the crash, the tanker driver tried to escape but was caught by local residents and handed over to the Zaman Town Police Station.
