Tarique Rahman sworn in as Bangladesh’s PM after landslide victory

Tarique Rahman, leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), became Bangladesh’s Prime Minister on Tuesday, marking a major political shift after his party’s sweeping parliamentary election win.

At 60, Rahman steps into office with urgent goals: stabilizing politics, restoring investor trust, and reviving key industries like garments, damaged during the Gen Z-driven uprising that ousted Sheikh Hasina in 2024. His rise concludes an interim period led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, who guided the nation through its transition.

Breaking tradition, the swearing-in took place outdoors at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban, instead of the presidential residence. President Mohammed Shahabuddin led the event, attended by politicians, diplomats, officials, and global allies like China, India, and Pakistan.

The BNP’s two-thirds parliamentary majority marks its return to power after nearly two decades. Jamaat-e-Islami also made historic gains with 68 seats after its election ban was lifted post-Hasina’s removal. The Awami League, barred from elections due to revoked registration, is replaced in opposition by Jamaat-e-Islami and the National Citizen Party—led by youth pivotal in the uprising.

Rahman’s political journey has been contentious. Returning last year from 17 years of self-exile in London following his mother’s death, he revitalized BNP support despite corruption accusations he denies.

In his first post-election speech, Rahman urged unity, discipline, and peace. He called on supporters to avoid revenge or actions risking instability, emphasizing the need to protect law and order.
