ISLAMABAD: Chief Justice of Pakistan Yahya Afridi has underscored that cases related to taxation, particularly those with implications for the national economy, will be taken up on a priority basis by the Supreme Court.

An official statement issued after a high-level meeting chaired by the chief justice said the discussion focused on formulating a strategy to expedite the disposal of tax cases that have been pending for long periods. The meeting was attended by Justice Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb, the chairman of the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), the FBR member (legal), and other senior officials.

According to the statement, Chief Justice Afridi observed that delays in tax litigation limit fiscal capacity and negatively affect investor confidence. He stressed that timely adjudication of such cases is essential for economic stability and investment growth.

The participants reviewed mechanisms to resolve high-value and long-standing tax disputes, agreeing that cases involving substantial amounts would be fast-tracked. The meeting also highlighted the importance of stronger coordination between tax authorities and the judiciary.

In addition, possible institutional reforms were discussed to promote uniformity in rulings and ensure quicker resolution of tax-related matters.
