GUJRANWALA: In a troubling incident in Gujranwala, a teenage girl has been taken into custody after allegedly killing her younger sister following a heated argument over social media followers. The incident came to light after the family initially hesitated to report the matter to authorities.
According to the FIR, Abdul Shakoor, a paralyzed father of seven children, recounted that he was at home with two sons-in-law on August 30 when they heard a disturbance on the roof. When they investigated, they discovered Kainat and her sister Zobia Manahil engaged in a dispute over social media popularity.
Shakoor claimed that Kainat grabbed a kitchen knife and attacked Zobia, stabbing her in the back. Despite efforts to provide first aid, Zobia succumbed to her injuries due to heavy blood loss. Police reports indicate that the family was reluctant to involve authorities initially, and the incident was only uncovered through Rescue 1122.
Authorities revealed that the accused girl confessed to the stabbing during initial questioning, citing a rivalry over TikTok followers as the motive. She allegedly accused her sister of “stealing” her followers, leading to an argument that escalated violently. The police have recovered the murder weapon and noted that the girl destroyed her mobile phone, believing it could be used as evidence. The device has been sent for forensic analysis.
Law enforcement officials expressed concern that the victim’s family might later seek to withdraw the case or attempt reconciliation. To prevent this, they pledged to include strict non-compoundable charges in the FIR, ensuring the case proceeds legally. Officer Hina Naik Bakht emphasized the difficulty of the situation, noting that the father had filed the FIR against his own daughter and that the family was initially resistant to legal action.
Both sisters were active on social media platforms, regularly uploading videos, especially on TikTok. The family shared that the girls aimed to become financially independent through their online content, which often involved food vlogging and other creative videos.
The investigation is ongoing, with forensic evidence and social media activity under review as authorities seek justice for the tragic loss.
