ISLAMABAD:
In a bid to enhance internet performance nationwide, the government has decided to expand the telecom spectrum to 600 megahertz a step expected to boost network capacity by nearly 200 percent and improve speed, reliability and overall service quality.
Briefing the National Assembly during Question Hour on Thursday, the parliamentary secretary for IT and Telecom said the surge in internet consumption over the past one to two years has placed heavy strain on existing infrastructure. The increased demand, fueled by digital government services, online education, employment platforms and business activity, has resulted in slower speeds and repeated service disruptions.
She explained that the additional spectrum would help ease network congestion, allow smoother data transmission and reduce service breakdowns. According to her, users are likely to experience noticeable improvements by the end of February once the expansion process is completed.
Addressing connectivity issues in various regions, the parliamentary secretary noted that challenges often stem from technical limitations rather than the absence of telecom operators. These include restricted spectrum availability, backhaul bottlenecks, power outages and delays in regulatory approvals.
