ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has successfully foiled a major terrorist plot targeting the outskirts of Islamabad, according to Federal Information Minister Atta Tarar during a media briefing today.
Detailing the operation, Tarar revealed that a planned suicide attack for November 11 was intercepted and neutralized before the assailant could reach the intended high-value target. The terrorists had aimed to strike Islamabad’s suburbs, but timely intervention prevented what could have been a catastrophic event.
Within 48 hours of the attempted attack, security forces eliminated four militants in coordinated operations carried out by the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) and the Intelligence Bureau (IB). Investigations uncovered that the attackers were trained in Afghanistan, with Noor Wali Mehsud—currently based in Kabul—identified as the mastermind behind the plot.
Tarar further disclosed that the terrorists maintained communication with extremist networks in Afghanistan and involved Afghan nationals in the planning of the Islamabad courthouse attack.
Key confessions from arrested militant Sajidullah Shina revealed crucial operational details. Shina, a Bajaur resident, recounted instructions from a TTP commander to travel to Afghanistan under the coordination of Qari Usman. From Jalalabad to Kabul, Shina was directed step-by-step, ultimately smuggling a suicide vest from a cemetery in Peshawar to Islamabad.
Authorities noted that all communications among the suspects were facilitated via a single mobile application, enabling real-time cross-border coordination. The investigation into the Islamabad courthouse attack has progressed significantly, with all primary links uncovered and shared openly with the public.
The minister highlighted the dedication and sacrifices of Pakistan’s security forces in combating terrorism, underscoring the importance of vigilance and professionalism. He stated that today’s revelations present both to the nation and the international community Pakistan’s determination to dismantle terrorist networks.
This operation exemplifies Pakistan’s commitment to thwarting terrorism through intelligence-driven efforts and inter-agency collaboration, successfully preventing devastating attacks while disrupting cross-border extremist activities.
