TIBET/ (BEIJING): Tibet was struck by a magnitude 5.7 earthquake on Monday, according to the National Center for Seismology (NCS).
The quake occurred at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers, increasing the likelihood of aftershocks and potential damage.
The NCS posted the seismic details on X, stating the quake occurred at 2:41am IST, with coordinates at latitude 29.02°N and longitude 87.48°E.
This seismic activity follows a smaller quake of magnitude 3.7 that rattled the same region on May 8, at 8:18 PM IST, at a similar depth and nearby coordinates.
Tibet and neighboring Nepal sit on a major geological fault line where the Indian tectonic plate pushes northward into the Eurasian plate.
This tectonic interaction makes the region highly seismically active, often resulting in earthquakes that can significantly uplift the Himalayas’ peaks, impacting the landscape permanently.
