ToRs for Islamic Military Alliance Not Finalized Yet: Sartaj

Islamabad (July 18, 2017): Adviser to the Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz told the Senate that the ToRs governing the operations of the Islamic military alliance had not been finalized yet.

He was speaking on the matter in Senate after questions raised by the parliamentarians regarding Raheels Sharif’s role in Islamic Military Alliance.

“There must be a meeting between member nations in order for the ToRs to be finalized, which has not been possible,” he said while assuring that parliament would be briefed regarding the ToRs as soon as they took shape.Responding the lawmakers questions he said that Islamic military alliance was different from the alliance made against Yemen and Raheel Sharif yet not take control of the alliance as chief.

However, lawmakers responded to his statement by questioning why the former army chief had been sent to Saudi Arabia if the ToRs were still unclear, with Chairman Senate Raza Rabbani questioning why Sharif was in Saudi Arabia if he was not yet leading any army.Answering the chairman senate reservation, Aziz said that Raheel Sharif role would be consultative and he was taking part in drafting ToRs of the alliance. He said former army chief presence in Saudi Arabia will not affect Pakistan’s foreign policy and will rather balance the situation.

Replying to question regarding US delegation visit to Pakistan, Aziz said that US delegation was apprised over the Pakistan military operation agaisnt Haqqani Network and militants under the operation Zarb-e-Azm.
