LAKKI MARWAT: A tragic incident unfolded in Lakki Marwat’s Surband Langar Khel area on Saturday when a mortar shell explosion resulted in the deaths of five children and left 13 others injured.
The explosion occurred in the jurisdiction of Saddar police station after a group of children stumbled upon an old mortar round near the outskirts of their village. Believing it to be harmless, they brought the shell home. It detonated while the children were playing, with devastating consequences.
According to initial reports, the blast claimed the lives of four girls and one boy, all aged between six and 12. The victims died instantly at the scene.
Rescue officials reported that 13 members of the same household, including men and women, sustained injuries ranging from minor to critical. All the injured were quickly transported to a nearby medical facility for treatment.
Law enforcement, including District Police Officer (DPO) Lakki Marwat, swiftly responded to the incident, securing the area and initiating an investigation.
In response to the explosion, bomb disposal teams were dispatched to comb the site for any remaining unexploded ordnance, aiming to prevent further harm.
