KARACHI: A nationwide strike by the All Pakistan Goods Transporters Alliance has disrupted the movement of cargo and essential commodities, creating growing concerns over supply shortages and rising prices.
The wheel-jam protest, which began last week, has affected the transportation of imported and exported goods along with food and other essential supplies in several parts of the country.
Transporters are protesting against what they describe as excessive taxation, escalating operating expenses and delays in implementing agreed transport policies. They have warned that the disruption will continue until their demands are addressed through concrete measures.
Meanwhile, petroleum dealers have also stepped up pressure on the government, giving authorities a 72-hour deadline to resolve their grievances. They have announced plans to shut petrol stations nationwide from 6am on August 15 if their demands remain unmet.
Federal Minister Abdul Aleem Khan held talks with representatives of the transport sector and assured them that the government was committed to resolving the issue through dialogue. However, no date has yet been announced for the next round of negotiations.
The transporters have expressed willingness to resume talks but said they will call off the strike only after practical steps are taken and their demands are formally approved and implemented.
