KARACHI: In another case highlighting the perils of online marriages, 19-year-old Tunisian woman Sinda Ayyari finds herself stranded in Karachi after her Pakistani husband, Muhammad Amir, divorced her just seven months after their wedding
Sinda, who connected with Amir—a resident of Lyari—through Facebook, traveled from Tunisia to Karachi on a 90-day visit visa on November 28, 2024. Their online friendship culminated in marriage, which was officially registered with the Lyari Baghdadi Union Council.
However, the marriage was short-lived, with Amir divorcing Sinda after less than a year. With her visa set to expire on February 18, 2025, she is now without financial support and has approached the Women Police Station in Liaquatabad for assistance.“I have no support from my husband and no money to cover my expenses,” Sinda told authorities, requesting an exit permit to return to Tunisia.
When asked if she planned to pursue legal action against her ex-husband, the young woman told media, “They treated me very badly, so I want to claim my rights.”
Currently, she is being sheltered at the women’s police protection center in Lyari’s Old City area while her case is under review. Police officials confirmed that Amir was summoned to the station, where he acknowledged the divorce but did not offer any financial support.
