Turkey lifts ban on headscarf, beard in armed force   

ANKARA: Turk government lifted decades-long ban on headscarves for women and beards for men serving in armed forces.

According to a ruling released in the official gazette, the government allowed all civilian personnel serving in Turkish armed forces to wear the dress according to Islamic values. The new regulation also allowed male military civilian personnel not to wear tie during summer months.

Turkey had lifted ban on headscarves for policewomen while on duty on August 27 this year. Ban on headscarves and beards were imposed by Turkish secular constitution in 1923.
