ANKARA: In response to a tragic attack on the Turkish aerospace and defense company TUSAS in Ankara, major social media platforms, including X, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, and TikTok, faced restrictions across Turkey
The lockdown on these platforms was swiftly implemented following reports of the assault, during which terrorists stormed the TUSAS headquarters. NetBlocks, a global internet observatory that monitors cyber security and digital governance, confirmed the restrictions via a post on X, stating, “Confirmed: Live metrics show social media platforms including X, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, and TikTok have been restricted in Turkey.” This action was accompanied by a broadcast ban related to the attack.
Eyewitness accounts describe a large explosion followed by a barrage of gunfire, with plumes of smoke visible in the sky and significant damage reported to nearby structures. Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya confirmed that the two attackers, a man and a woman, were also killed during the incident.
While the identity of those responsible for the attack has not been officially confirmed, Turkey’s Defense Minister Yasar Guler indicated a connection to the militant Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).
As of now, it remains unclear when the restrictions on social media platforms will be lifted, leaving many in Turkey unable to access critical information and updates during this time of crisis.
