Turkish President Defends Istanbul Election Re-Run Amid Protests

ANKARA: Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan has said the decision to re-run Istanbul’s mayoral election is an important step toward strengthening democracy.

Addressing to the Turkish parliament, he said government considered there is organized corruption and full illegality in the Istanbul mayoral elections that were held in March.

Earlier, Turkish High Election Board ruled today for a fresh Istanbul mayoral contest on 23rd of next month.

Meanwhile, several small Turkish parties have signalled they could back the main opposition candidate for mayor of Istanbul in an election re-run, in protest at electoral authorities’ decision to cancel March’s closely fought municipal election.
