KARACHI: A tragic accident occurred on Tuesday when a high-speed motorcycle lost control and collided with a footpath close to the Ayesha Manzil Jamat Khana, resulting in the deaths of two young men.
The victims, identified as 23-year-old Hamza and 20-year-old Aleem, were cousins and employed at a jewelry shop located in Meena Bazaar, Karimabad. According to police reports, both hailed from New Karachi’s Sector 5-D. It was also revealed that one of the victims’ fathers serves as a traffic police officer.
Initial investigations suggest that the accident was caused by reckless speeding. Police are currently examining CCTV footage of the incident, which captured the moment the motorcycle hit the curb.
This unfortunate event adds to the alarming number of traffic fatalities in Karachi. So far in 2026, at least 223 lives have been lost and over 2,250 individuals injured in traffic accidents across the city. Many of these incidents involved heavy vehicles such as trailers and water tankers.
Statistics indicate that heavy vehicles have been responsible for a significant portion of these fatalities, with 75 deaths linked to accidents involving such vehicles. Notably, trailer-related crashes have been the leading cause, with 36 fatalities from January to mid-March. Water tanker accidents have also been deadly, claiming 20 lives within the same period.
In a disturbing development, two water tankers involved in accidents were set ablaze by angry mobs at the scenes of crashes. Other major contributors to road fatalities include buses, which caused seven deaths; Mazda trucks, with eight fatalities; and dumpers, responsible for four deaths. Overall, dumper-related accidents accounted for roughly three percent of all road deaths.
The data further reveals that among the victims were 161 men, 30 women, 23 boys, and nine girls. The rise in traffic-related deaths underscores the urgent need for improved road safety measures in the city.
