WEB DESK: U.S. military personnel involved in using secret information related to an operation against Venezuela’s President has been arrested, authorities announced.
According to the U.S. Department of Justice, the service member was part of the planning of an operation targeting President Nicolás Maduro. The department stated that the individual used classified government information to place bets on an online gambling platform, wagering approximately $32,000 that Maduro would be ousted from power by January.
By placing these bets, the officer reportedly earned over $400,000. Reports indicate that U.S. President Donald Trump was unaware of the officer’s arrest. The president expressed disapproval of insider trading and betting on war-related events, commenting that the world has turned into a giant casino, with people placing bets—calling it a crazy world that has become very different from before.
It is worth noting that in January, the U.S. military carried out strikes in various locations across Caracas and other parts of Venezuela, leading to the arrest of President Maduro and his wife, who were subsequently transferred to the United States.
