UN crucial for tackling global challenges, says Pakistan’s Ambassador Asim

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, highlighted the UN’s pivotal role in coordinating international responses to both emerging and long-term global issues, including artificial intelligence, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and climate change.

He made the remarks while briefing a delegation of 20 students from Manhattan University on Pakistan’s engagement with the UN system. Ambassador Asim stressed that multilateral cooperation is becoming increasingly critical in an era of rapid technological and geopolitical change.

On the matter of Security Council reform, the Permanent Representative reiterated Pakistan’s opposition to expanding permanent membership. He argued that adding new permanent seats would not address existing disparities and could exacerbate divisions, undermining the Council’s effectiveness.

Instead, Pakistan supports enhancing the category of non-permanent membership, in line with the Uniting for Consensus (UfC) Group’s proposal, to create a more democratic, representative, and functional Security Council.
