GENEVA: The United Nations has launched a formal investigation following alarming reports that the Indian Navy allegedly threw Rohingya refugees into the Andaman Sea.
The United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) expressed grave concern over the incident, labeling the reported actions as “inhumane, unacceptable, and a blatant violation of international law.”
In a strongly worded statement, the UNHRC said, “The idea that vulnerable refugees may have been forcibly cast into the sea from naval vessels is both horrifying and deeply disturbing. If confirmed, this represents a serious breach of fundamental human rights and UN conventions.”
The UN has urged the Indian government to carry out an immediate and transparent investigation into the matter, provide a detailed explanation, and ensure the cessation of any such actions.
The commission reiterated its call for all nations to uphold their humanitarian obligations, particularly toward stateless and persecuted communities like the Rohingya.
