UN Security Council denounces Taliban’s Assertion That Afghan Land Is not used for terrorism

WEB DESK: The latest report from the United Nations Security Council has rejected the Taliban’s claim that Afghan territory is no longer being exploited for terrorist operations. In its 16th detailed assessment, the UN sanctions and monitoring team described this assertion as “unsubstantiated.”

The report cautions that neighboring countries increasingly see Afghanistan as a growing source of regional instability. Multiple member states have reported that various militant groups including ISIS-Khorasan, Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), Al-Qaeda, Turkistan Islamic Party, and Jaish Ansarullah are active within Afghanistan’s borders, with some groups allegedly planning attacks beyond its borders.

The UN highlights that Al-Qaeda continues to maintain strong links with the Taliban, while ISIS-Khorasan is regarded as a major adversary. The report singles out TTP as the most significant threat to regional security, operating from safe havens in Afghanistan.

Furthermore, the report notes internal divisions within Taliban leadership regarding this issue. Some senior officials view TTP as a threat to diplomatic relations with Pakistan, whereas others still endorse the group’s activities.

The UN indicates that TTP has launched over 600 attacks across Pakistan by 2025, many of which are sophisticated and involve suicide bombings, predominantly carried out by Afghan nationals. The findings underscore the serious security challenges that these militant activities continue to pose to the region.
