Uncertainty over Iranian delegation arrival as envoy deletes Islamabad visit post

ISLAMABAD: Confusion briefly emerged over the arrival of Iran’s delegation for upcoming talks with the United States after Tehran’s envoy to Pakistan deleted a social media post referencing the visit.

Iran’s ambassador, Reza Amiri Moghadam, had earlier stated on X that a delegation from Iran would reach Islamabad on Thursday night for “serious negotiations” based on a 10-point framework proposed by Tehran. The post, however, was removed shortly after being published.

An official at the Iranian embassy later clarified that the message had been shared prematurely, citing timing concerns, but declined to confirm whether the delegation would still arrive as initially indicated.

Despite the confusion, both Washington and Tehran have reaffirmed their participation in the Pakistan-hosted dialogue aimed at reducing regional tensions.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has invited both sides to Islamabad in an effort to facilitate a comprehensive agreement and resolve outstanding disputes.

The White House has already confirmed that US Vice President JD Vance will head the American delegation for negotiations expected to take place over the weekend.

Meanwhile, authorities in Islamabad have declared two local holidays ahead of the high-level meetings, a move often associated with major diplomatic engagements. While routine activities may be affected, essential services including law enforcement, healthcare, and utilities will continue to operate without interruption.

The brief deletion of the envoy’s statement has added a layer of uncertainty to the timing of the talks, though preparations for the negotiations appear to be moving forward.
