Under-19 WC Semis: India Set Pakistan 273-Run Target

Christchurch (January 30, 2018): India set Pakistan 273 runs target to win in the semifinal of Under-19 World Cup at Hagley Oval in Christchurch, New Zealand.  

India won the toss and elected to bat first and scored 272 runs on nine wickets at Hagley Oval today.

India got off to a flying start, with captain Prithvi Shaw (41) and fellow opener Manjot Kalra (47) putting on 89 runs for the first wicket. However, both fell in quick succession, leaving Gill, who came in at number 3, to do the repair work.

He, however, did not disappoint, putting on a couple of half-century partnerships, first with wicketkeeper Harvik Desai (20) and with bowler Anukul Roy (33). He notched up India’s first century of the tournament in the final over of India’s innings.Muhammad Musa was the pick of the Pakistani bowlers, taking 4/63 in his 10 overs. Arsha Iqbal, too, chipped in with three wickets. However, it was Pakistan’s fielding that let them down, missing as many as three catches and several clear run-out chances.The winner of this match will play against three-time champions Australia, who reached the final a day earlier, beating Afghanistan by six wickets at the same venue. The final will be held at Bay Oval, Mount Maunganui, on Feb 3.

India made no changes in the playing XI, which crushed Bangladesh by 131 runs in the quarterfinal, while Pakistan brought in an extra batsman Imran Shah in place of bowler Suleman Shafqat.
